In 2016, approximately 40 Syrian refugee families, including over 170 children ranging from just 2 months to 18 years old, arrived in Albany, NY from refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. These families had endured unimaginable hardships in Syria and throughout their journey to safety. After spending between two and four years in refugee camps, they were finally granted visas to enter the United States—a place they envisioned as a land of opportunity and hope.
However, the reality they encountered was far from what they had dreamed. Upon arrival, they were placed in overcrowded apartments plagued by mice, lacking basic amenities like air conditioning or heating, and with limited access to food and hygiene supplies. Additionally, the language barrier posed significant challenges, making communication and integration even more difficult.
Despite having survived a dictatorial regime, war atrocities, and perilous journeys, these Syrian families remain determined to build better lives for their children. With the right support, they have the potential to become invaluable members of our community. By offering them the basic assistance needed to resettle with dignity, we can help them realize this potential.
Adapting to a new country with a different language and culture is an immense challenge for our immigrant families. Thankfully, volunteers in the Capital District have been incredibly generous, providing essential support and building lasting friendships with these new arrivals. Their efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
